Having a blast down in the South Park area of the Ouray Ice Park. Take note of the even feet, low heels, and hip position. That’s how you do it!

Guided Ice Climbing Instruction in the Ouray Ice Park

The Ouray Ice Park is an incredible resource. No where else on Earth is there this many ice climbs within a short distance from the car. It is the perfect place to take your first swings on friendly flows or perfect your rhythm on steep pillars. For the last twenty years I have been instructing guests on the techniques for efficient ice movement. The Ice Park allows climbers to practice on a variety of different climbs in a more controlled environment. There are climbs of all grades, and it allows to get a lot of mileage on vertical terrain. Working on techniques like “even feet - staggered tools”, “the grade four 3-step”, or “lateral vs. rotational hip movement” are the keys to gaining comfort on the steeps and climbing bigger routes around the world in style. If you really want to hone your ability to scale huge frozen cliffs with confidence, the Ouray Ice Park is the place to start.

Longer climbs down in the Trestle area of the Ouray Ice Park are a great place to find rhythm and gain efficiency.

A couple of the tallest routes in South Park. It is possible to climb steeper lines like this without pumping out your forearms. The key is finding the rest stances by using you hips and feet well.

Ouray Ice Park Guided Climbing Rates and Information

Mobius Mountaineering is an authorized Commercial Guiding Operator for the Ouray Ice Park. I am proud to offer my skills as a coach, guide, and instructor in this incredible winter playground. I am an IFMGA certified guide and teaching ice movement is my specialty. Over the last twenty years, I have taught hundreds of climbers and other guides how to move efficiently and execute different strategies for a variety of climbs. The techniques are not intuitive at first, but through focused practice and specific drills to work on individual components, ice climbing can become a rhythmic fluid vertical dance that is extremely fun to perform. But much like learning a waltz, “Before you can put it to music, you’ve got to learn the steps.”
